n Patient consults increased by 20 percent in FY19 from prior
n Successfully completed “Gene(s) of the Month” educational
service for 17 genes and shared these with Memorial Sloan
Kettering and the alliance partners.
n Increased visibility of Miami Cancer Institute and remained
current in best clinical practice by participating in three national
clinical genetics conferences and three local clinical genetics
expert meeting groups.
n Maintained status as faculty at FIU/Herbert Wertheim College of
Medicine, contributing to education of undergraduate medical
students in clinical genetics.
Protocol Support Laboratory and
Bio-specimen Repository Facility
The Miami Cancer Institute Bio-specimen Repository Facility
provides researchers with a wealth of resources to conduct
cancer research. Through an in-depth analysis of biological
samples (such as blood and tissues), scientists are able to further
understand those molecular factors that contribute to cancer and
that may lead to prevention, early detection and cure. Their work
is paving the way for predictive diagnostics and personalized
n Supported bio-specimen collection, processing and shipment
for 56 clinical trials, with approximately 2,300 patient visits for
n Contributed to the design of correlative science and managed
bio-specimens for four Miami Cancer Institute investigator-initiated
n Designed and implemented Miami Cancer Institute Research
Pathology SharePoint, an interactive system that connects the
clinical trials office, pathology and protocol support lab in real-time
to request and distribute bio-specimens in an expedited
and protocol-compliant manner.
n Expanded capacity for patient enrollment into the bio-specimen
repository facility program to include pre-surgery, pre-operative
and infusion locations.
n Banked a total of 16,991 blood and tissue samples (for a
total of 25,561 since program launch) in collaboration with
Baptist Hospital pathology and Miami Cancer Institute clinical
n Executed nine approved requests from internal and external
investigators that included access to banked samples and
initiation of targeted collections.
n Launched research collaborations with four external institutions
(FIU, Augusta University, BocaBiolistics and MT Group).
