Accreditations, Certifications, Recognition
n Data from Blood and Marrow Transplant program submitted to
the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Registry
showed continuous process improvement standards status at
good standing, 100 percent, for the fourth consecutive trimester.
n Imaging centers achieved the highest designations of excellence
— Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence and Breast Imaging
Center of Excellence — from the American College of Radiology.
n In April 2019, Miami Cancer Institute was awarded the
Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Outstanding Employer Award
in the large employer category. The award acknowledges
employers who honor and show exemplary support for oncology
nurses. The Institute demonstrated a commitment to the
ONS mission, vision and values through a variety of initiatives
throughout 2018-2019. Examples of support include sponsoring
employees to attend ONS Congress, providing an extensive
educational catalog, actively promoting ONS publications,
establishing oncology as a specialty in the competency and
clinical advancement program, and supporting participation
in ONS chapters or online communities. The Institute joined
the ranks of other winners in this category including James
Comprehensive Cancer Center at Ohio State University, Sidney
Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins, and
Moffitt Cancer Center.
n Miami Cancer Institute received the U.S. Oncology Research
Site Excellence Award, presented during the 2019 Annual
Science Forum in Denver, Colorado, September 19-20. This
award highlights an increase in accrual from the previous year
as well as zero corrective and preventive action plans.
n Miami Cancer Institute’s clinical lab and molecular diagnostics
laboratory received accreditation from the College of American
Pathologists (CAP). The re-accreditation for the clinical lab
came with no deficiencies. It’s the first CAP accreditation for
the molecular diagnostics lab, which moved into an empty
building just 20 months ago. The full two-year accreditation is a

ranked Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Hospital and South
Miami Hospital (part of the American College of Surgeons,
Commission on Cancer accreditation as an integrated network)
as high performing, compared to other hospitals treating similarly
complex conditions in lung cancer and colon cancer surgeries.
n The Quality Oncology Practice Initiative is a three-year
certification for outpatient hematology-oncology practices. The
certification reflects a commitment to quality of care that leads
to fundamental changes in the clinical practice of oncology.
Chart data abstraction is performed each year to maintain
certification with 2019 results ending at 95 percent.
