Blood and Marrow Transplant
In Collaboration With Baptist Hospital
The Blood and Marrow Transplant team continues its mission of
providing state-of-the-art care to residents of South Florida and
internationally. Transplant patients now have the convenience of
staying close to home and receiving care from a highly skilled and
professional team of caregivers. Some highlights:
n Construction was completed for the five-bed inpatient unit and
opened in July 2019. Operations were successfully migrated
from 5 Clarke to 4 Main; daily 9 a.m. multidisciplinary rounds
were instituted at Baptist Hospital on 4 Main to include
transplant M.D.s, intensivists, infectious disease M.D.s,
pharmacists, nursing and support services.
n The cell processing and immunotherapy laboratory opened in July
2019 in preparation for the cell processing of CD34+ selection
and T-cell depletion techniques, thus eliminating the donor cells
that can cause serious complications of graft-versus-host disease.
Consequently, patients were able to avoid lengthy time periods
of being treated with immunosuppressive medications and avoid
many of the life-threatening and long-term effects of stem cell
transplantation. Since then six cellular apheresis products for
CD34+ selection have been processed. Two inpatients received
CD34+ enriched allogeneic transplants in July 2019, one from a
related donor and one from an unrelated donor.
n Thirty-nine peripheral stem cell apheresis collections were
performed in FY19, with the first related donor collected in

n Forty-five extracorporeal photopheresis treatments were
performed in FY19.
Car-T Cell Clinical Trial
n CAR-T cell therapy is a type of cancer immunotherapy that
has the potential to work with a patient’s immune system
by reprogramming their T cells (or fighter cells). Miami
Cancer Institute’s first outpatient CAR-T cell trial for
non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma was awarded and opened in Fall
2019 with the collaboration of Blood and Marrow Transplant
and Clinical Research.
